| My Nokia N8 12MP Camera Is Better Than Your Compact Digital Camera (Really?) Posted: 11 Nov 2010 05:18 AM PST One of the biggest selling point of Nokia N8 smartphone is its 12 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens camera with Xenon flash for high resolution photos (4000 x 3000 pixels) and HD video recording (720p). The camera sensor size is 1/1.83″, with ND filter, geo-tagging, and face detection. Is the smartphone’s camera better your compact digital camera? Let’s find out by yourselves! Here are the sample photos I took using Nokia N8 camera at 12 megapixel resolution and upload to Flickr without editing/touching/modifying/blah-blah.
Read on for other sample photos and HD video test.

You might want to watch the HD video at full-resolution. My two centsOverall, I like the quality of Nokia N8 camera, especially at closeup. It cannot beat a 12MP DSLR’s quality but, for the first time, the quality is competitive to a compact digital camera. It is nice to have a camera in pocket which also serve as a smartphone at the same time. Do note that high megapixel DOES NOT mean better quality. It only means you can have larger print of the photo, say a human-height size poster. If you are taking pictures using Nokia N8, try to avoid using the Xenon flash whenever possible. Yes, the flash is more powerful than other smartphone’s crappy LED flash but the output, most of time, is disappointed. Also, flash is battery monster. |
| Nokia N8 Review in Malaysia: Specs, Design, Pics And Price Posted: 10 Nov 2010 11:55 PM PST You have seen the Nokia N8 box and what’s included inside. Now, let’s take a detail look at the phone itself. The Nokia N8 design, specs, and price in Malaysia. The Nokia N8 smartphone is a phone with build-in 12 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss[?] lens and Xenon[?] flash, 16GB storage, new Symbian^3 OS, and more. Nokia N8, the specsHere is the specs highlights of Nokia N8:
Read on for Nokia N8′s design, pics and price. Nokia N8, the designThe frontI quite like Nokia N8 design at the first glance. Big touch screen with only 1 menu button in front. Nice color. The microphone is hiding at the bottom of display. The menu button flash when you have notifications (SMS, missed called, etc). I found the menu button is too small and hard to reach by thumb as it is located the bottom edge of the phone. The topAt the top are AV connector, HDMI connector and power key. The bottomThere is only a charging connector at the bottom The backAt the back is the selling point of Nokia N8 — 12 MegaPixel Carl Zeiss lens camera and Xenon flash. Perhaps 12 megapixel camera is too big to fix into the body. The camera park is stand out from the rest of the back surface for about 2mm, which looks odd and might scratch the lens glass. Not good. Under the camera lens is the loudspeaker. Due to the location of the loudspeaker, you’d get a softer sound when placing Nokia N8 with front facing up. Different volume depends on how you place the phone on the desk… The sidesAt the top of one side of Nokia N8 are the MicroSD memory card slot and SIM card slot. The bottom of the side are the charging indicator light and micro USB port. I like the charging indicator light because it tells you whether the charger is power on/off at a glance. The micro USB port is the only port/slow with no cover. At the top of one side of Nokia N8 are the MicroSD memory card slot and SIM card slot, closed by a pair of plastic door-like-cover. On the other side, there are volume/zoom key, lock switch, and camera button. I found the lock switch at the middle of the side is hard to reach by thumb when I am holding Nokia N8. How much is Nokia N8 price in Malaysia? The Nokia N8′s recommended retail price in Malaysia is RM1690 (USD$547). If you subscribe to Maxis Nokia N8 phone deal, you can get Nokia N8 as low as RM999 (24 months contract). |
| Nokia N8 Review: What Is In The Box? Posted: 10 Nov 2010 05:31 PM PST I have received the Nokia N8 from Maxis 10 reviewers programme. In this post, I’d show you what you’ll get in the box! These are the items you get in the Nokia N8 box:
There is no Ovi installation CD because the installation file is included in the phone’s storage. Clever! Note that the adapters are specially designed for Nokia N8, therefore you have to take extra caution not to lost them. Else, it is either difficult to find a replacement or you have to pay a high price. Nokia N8 chargerAmong the items, I am impressed by the Nokia N8 charger’s design. The charger is small and slim. The 3rd prongs in the middle can be shrink in when not in used. Nice! Nokia N8 earphoneFor the earphone, there are a total of 5 buttons on the controller. In contrast, A-brand’s earphone has no visible button. The sound quality is, hmm, so-so? I didn’t get some kind of “crystal clear” sound. Also, I am not fan of in-ear earbud. It feels like stuck a finger into nose hole… Well, just my personal opinion. OK, that’s all the items in Nokia N8 box. Wait. Where is the Nokia N8 smartphone? Please follow the next article for details on N8, the smartphone. |
