How to Know When Someone Hacks Your Facebook Account?

Posted: 18 May 2010 01:58 PM PDT

Little do we know that Facebook has a security setting which will notify you when someone access your Facebook account from other locations or computers. Read on this tutorial for how to do it.

Setup Facebook security

Here is the video tutorial to show you the steps:

  1. Login your Facebook account (preferred your home computer)
  2. Click the “Account” drop down menu at the top right hand side
  3. Click “Account Settings”
  4. Under “Settings” tab of “My Account” page, locate “Account Security” and click “change”
  5. At “Would you like to receive notifications for login from new devices?”, click “Yes”
  6. Click “Submit” button. Done.

That’s easy, isn’t it? Next, you need to register your computer.

Register your computer

Facebook: register your computer

Now, you have set the security setting but you need to register your home computer so that Facebook know you are logging in from authorized computer.

  1. Log out Facebook
  2. Log in Facebook
  3. You will be asked to register your computer. Enter a name for your computer.
  4. If you are NOT logging in from a public computer, tick the checkbox of “Don’t ask me again from this computer” to prevent Facebook ask again.
  5. Click “Save” and you are done.

From now on, you will get a notification email from Facebook when someone login you Facebook account from other computer. You can then take necessary actions such as changing facebook password, email password, etc.

While cannot prevent hackers to access your account, the Facebook account security is useful to alert you. It works on both computer and mobile access.

My two cents

Recently, some of my friends complained that their facebook accounts had been hacked and someone got unauthorized access.

I don’t think Facebook security is that weak. Most probably my friends are using some weak passwords or forgot to log out Facebook before leaving their computer.

Have you heard of any Facebook account got hacked?
