Choosing the Best Wireless Broadband Provider for iPad in Malaysia

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 04:05 AM PST

Malaysia wireless broadband providers

In this article, you will learn how to choose a wireless broadband service provider for your iPad 3G and the reasons of my pick — Maxis broadband.

Why subscribe wireless broadband plan for iPad?

I own both Apple iPhone and iPad 3G+WiFi. I have iPhone data plan but it is not shareable to iPad. I need a broadband plan for my Apple iPad.

My iPhone and iPad usage:

  • iPhone has limited battery life, not ideal for long time usage. I use iPhone for quick Internet access, e.g., reply Twitter mention, update Facebook status, check-in Foursquare, take & upload photos of my food and, of course, make phone calls.
  • iPad would be ideal for tasks like email checking, news reading, web browsing, which will take more than 5 minutes. iPad’s battery life is amazing that can last for a whole day usage.

How to choose a wireless broadband service provider for iPad?

My ideal wireless broadband service for iPad should be:

  1. Support iPad — the service provider should provides a micro-SIM or SIM card to install in iPad.
  2. Wide network coverage — broadband service without network coverage is equal to “useless”. I want a service provider with network coverage wherever I am.
  3. Fast — speed is important. I don’t want to use a broadband service that’s as slow as a dial-up connection.
  4. Stable — poor network stability make me wanna knock my head against a wall. A broadband connection should be stable, no disconnection.
  5. Cross platforms support — Although the wireless broadband service is for my Apple iPad, but I would also like be able to share the plan across different platforms, such as on my wife’s Windows computer, on my Apple iMac. Better still, shared via WiFi hotspot for several devices at the same time.
  6. Budget — Admit it, we want something that’s Good and Cheap. However, pricing is my last concern when choosing a plan.

Best wireless broadband provider in Malaysia?

There are several wireless broadband service providers in Malaysia: Maxis, DiGi, Celcom, P1, and Yes4G. The latter two are so called “4G” wireless broadband but both do not provide SIM card and has limited coverage. DiGi is cheap but with limited 3G coverage. Celcom is expensive and slow speed plans.

My winner of “wireless broadband service for iPad” is Maxis.

Maxis is one of the Malaysia telco with the widest network coverage. Maxis 3G network covered the small town I am living in.

As a Maxis postpaid customer, I get the special offer for Maxis broadband. RM48 per month (RM20 cheaper than normal rate) for 3GB data quota. It is a good deal and no other telco could offer the same. The plan also included a free HSDPA USB modem (E1552) that supports both PC and Mac OS X operating systems.

Note: I cut the Maxis broadband SIM card to micro-SIM size for Apple iPad 3G. When use in USB modem, I use a micro SIM adapter to fit the micro-SIM card.

Maxis also has iPad data plans but I don’t think it is a good deal.

The Maxis wireless broadband plans do not set speed limit (up to 7.2 Mbps). The actual speed depends on factors like modem capability, location, distance from the communication tower, and the number of simultaneous users.

In my personal experience, the download speed vary from 1.5Mbps to 3.5Mbps. It is faster and more stable than my Streamyx 1Mbps home broadband at anytime.

Maxis broadband speed test results

Info: If you have exceeded the allowed monthly quota, Maxis wireless broadband would still active at a much slower speed. The speed I got is around 100kbps (12.5 KB/s). That’s very slow…

MyLaunchPad – Maxis broadband self-help online panel

Maxis Broadband Self Care Portal

After subscribed to Maxis broadband, you are recommended to register a free account at MyLaunchPad for self-help services. From the online panel, you could view invoice, make payment, check your data usage, purchase extra quota…

My two cents

Although I stay at home most of the time using unmetered quota home fixed line broadband (Streamyx), Maxis wireless broadband serves as my backup connection when the home broadband connection is down.

When I am traveling, I don’t need to find a free WiFi network. The SIM card in my iPad provides Internet access, regardless I am in the bus, taking mass transits, or sitting in a corner in shopping mall.

Maxis wireless broadband service gives the best balance for network coverage, connection speed, and cost among other Malaysia wireless broadband providers. I am a happy paid customer.

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huawei E5832 3G Wireless Modem) Review

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:55 AM PST

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huaiwei E5832)

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huawei E5832 3G wireless modem) is a MiFi that connects to 3G network and creates a personal WiFi hotspot to provide Internet access for up to 5 devices.

Read on for the product photos and detail review.

What’s in the box

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huaiwei E5832)

In the simple packing, there are the Maxis WiFi modem (Huawei E5832), an USB cable, quick start guide, copyright and safety information, and a quick tips sticker.

The quick start guide provides important information about the WiFi modem. (Yes, I know you don’t read it) The Quick Tips sticker is helpful to remind you about the meaning of the LED light indicators. There are 5 of them! I would suggest you paste the sticker at the back of the device.

E5832 wireless modem specs

It supports HSPA/3G/EDGE/GPRS networks. Up to 7.2Mbps download and 5.76Mbps upload speed. Supports WiFi 802.1b/g and able to connect simultaneously up to 5 devices.

There is a Micro SD memory card slot (support to up to 32GB) and the WiFi modem can serve as USB storage device when connected to computer via USB port.

The battery life last 4 hours per charge. You charge it via an USB port.

Price: RM380 from Maxis without contract.

The design

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huaiwei E5832)

The WiFi modem looks like a mini size mobile phone, easy to be carried around in any pocket. The plastic casing is solid and I like the shinny silver front.

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huaiwei E5832)

On the right side, there is a dialing button at the upper side. Use the button to manually turn on/off Internet connection. (Internet connection is automatic on by default.) Below the dialing button are the WiFi/WPS button and power button. The WiFi/WPS button is used to turn on/off the WiFi network connection.

Maxis WiFi Modem (Huaiwei E5832)

On the left side of WiFi modem is the Micro SD card slot.

Open up the back cover, there is a 1500mAh battery (last 4 hours) and SIM card slot at the back.

Setup wireless connection

Setting up Maxis WiFi modem is easy. Follow the step-by-step instruction here:

  1. Open up the back cover.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Slow in the SIM card received from your telco.
  4. Write down the SSID and WiFi key. (your devices need them to connect to the WiFi network)
  5. Put back the battery.
  6. Close up the back cover.
  7. Turn on the wireless modem.
  8. Wait one or two minutes for it to start up and connect to Internet.
  9. Done. Now you can connect to the Maxis WiFi modem’s WiFi network from your devices.

Maxis broadband software

Maxis broadband software

If you connects the Maxis WiFi modem to a computer via USB port. It will auto detect and install the Maxis broadband application. The software allows you to connect to Internet, launch the MyLaunchPad (Maxis broadband self-help website), and access SMS and phonebook in the SIM card.

3G wireless modem web interface

3g wireless modem interface

For advanced users only. The Maxis WiFi modem included a web interface control panel like the other modem router. You can access it from http://192.168.1.1 from your router. (IP address can be modified via the web panel.)

The web panel provides more advanced settings for system, SIM, mobile network, dial-up, DHCP, and WiFi.

My two cents

If you have a few devices (smartphone, PSP, iPad, computer, etc) that needs to connect to Internet while you are traveling, get the E5832 wireless modem. It is small and easy to use.

The major drawback would be the 4 hours battery life. If you use a notebook, then it is not a problem. And, it is little pricey.

Apple iPad 2 on March 2, 2011

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 02:31 AM PST

iPad 2 release date: March 2, 2011

Apple iPad 2 is expected to be announced on March 2, 2011.

Apple already sent an invitation to media inviting them to a special event, which will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts at 10:00am. The iPad release date will be revealed then.

iPad 2 Feature wishlist

Among the iPad 2 rumors, iPad 2 is expected to included front-facing camera with FaceTime video call support, thinner and lighter than 1st generation iPad.

I own an iPad now and not going to get the iPad 2. The iPad’s weight is the major complaint of everyone who tried my iPad before. So, lighter weight for iPad 2, please. (but not smaller screen size)

And, less glare on the iPad screen please! A memory card slot would be great, too!

What’s your most wanted feature for the iPad 2?
