CNN Editor Got Fired Over Tweet

Posted: 07 Jul 2010 05:59 PM PDT

CNN Editor: Octavia Nasr

CNN’s senior editor of Middle East affairs, Octavia Nasr, learned her lesson on what to write online and it cost her 20-year career at CNN.

Here is the get-her-fired-tweet:

Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.. One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot.. #Lebanonless than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Who is Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah? (Wikipedia)

Nasr acknowledged publicly that she should be more careful when writing something that could be construed as support for a leader of Hezbollah, which is considered by the U.S. government to be a terrorist organization. And she clarified that what she respected about Fadlallah is his longtime support of women’s rights, not the more controversial anti-Israel positions. Apparently, that apology wasn’t enough.
